Belize is filled with an array of lush plants and rain forest and exotic wildlife that will captivate your senses.

Belizean forests include over 700 trees which have played a vital role in the history of the country. Undoubtedly, the history and the very presence of Belize as a colony is interwoven with the logging industry. Among the most important tree crops are logwood, mahogany and chicle. The Mahogany Tree is the national tree of Belize. Common fruit trees of Belize include Cashew, Coconut, Custard Apple, Guava, Mango and Papaya, Banana, Pineapple and Mammee. The national flower of Belize is the Black Orchid. There are approximately 250 species of orchids in Belize.

The wildlife in Belize is teaming with all types of exotic animals. Belize is home to the largest Jaguar population in the world. If you want to see one up close and personal you can travel to the Belize Zoo which is a short 30 minute drive on the western highway.

Many tourist take the option of going inside the Jaguar exhibit in a small cage and are able to take up close pictures. Sometimes the Jaguar will stick his tongue through the cage and lick the guest.

There are howler monkeys and spider monkeys that abound in many districts. There is even a baboon sanctuary that you can visit and experience up close.

Belize is home to the Tapir called by the locals “mountain cow”. This nocturnal species is known as the national animal of Belize. In much of Central America this species has disappeared and has become endangered. However Belize has healthy populations of them.

Belize is home to many different species of birds. If you google “Belize bird checklist” you find that there is 597 species. Wild green parrots live throughout the country along with frigate birds. The national bird is the keel-billed toucan, which inhabits the foothills and rainforest.
